Christ Church Cathedral Unveils "Eternal Conviction" by Jide’ Fresh During BLINK 2024

CINCINNATI, OH – October 17, 2024 – On October 16, 2024, Christ Church Cathedral revealed Eternal Conviction, a striking new mural by Jide’ Fresh, an African American artist based in Cincinnati. The mural, which features Saints Perpetua and Felicity depicted as two African women, coincided with the opening of BLINK 2024, the city’s celebrated arts and light festival. This mural serves as a bold reflection on faith, inclusion, and personal transformation—challenging traditional religious iconography and embracing contemporary relevance.

A Personal Journey of Resilience and Redemption

The story behind Eternal Conviction is deeply personal. On July 26, 2018, Jide’ Fresh (born Brandon Hill) was involved in a hit-and-run accident while riding his bicycle. Faced with severe physical injuries and emotional turmoil, he left his freelance work in videography and photography to seek stability. This search led him to Forward Movement, a Cincinnati-based nonprofit connected to Christ Church Cathedral and serving the Episcopal Church.

Due to the emotional and physical impact of his accident, Jide was unable to remain in the role for more than six months. He chose to forgo financial severance, asking instead to keep the computer from his job—a decision he credits with helping him rebuild his life and artistic career.

During his time at Forward Movement, Jide saw firsthand the church’s commitment to community, diversity, and justice. Although the role ended, the vision of Christ Church Cathedral’s values stayed with him, quietly shaping his journey. Now, six years later, Jide has returned—not as an employee, but as an artist honored to have his work displayed on the side of the church.

Eternal Conviction stands as a testament to resilience, redemption, and the power of art to transform lives,” says Jide. “This journey, from the accident in 2018 to this mural’s installation in 2024, is a reminder that life often comes full circle, offering opportunities for healing and growth.”

A Modern Take on Religious Art

While the mural depicts Saints Perpetua and Felicity, it is more than just a representation of African identity in religious spaces. Eternal Conviction invites viewers to rethink spiritual narratives, challenging traditional iconography by using vivid colors, bold strokes, and layered textures inspired by street art and modern pop-cultural aesthetics.

“There’s power in expanding who we see in sacred spaces,” Jide reflects. “This isn’t just about changing what religious art looks like—it’s about inviting people to imagine new meanings and possibilities for ancient stories.”

Christ Church Cathedral’s Commitment to Inclusion and Transformation

The mural represents Christ Church Cathedral’s dedication to evolving faith to meet the needs of today’s world. Through this installation, the church makes a statement about the importance of inclusion, truth, and transformation—not just as abstract ideals, but as guiding principles of action.

BLINK 2024: A Platform for Lasting Impact

By unveiling Eternal Conviction during BLINK 2024, one of the nation’s largest arts and light festivals, the church amplified the mural’s message. As festival-goers explore the installation, the mural offers a lasting invitation to reflect on faith, personal growth, and community transformation.

“BLINK is about transformation,” says Jide. “I wanted this mural to live beyond the lights—a work that challenges us to rethink the stories we tell and the ways we embrace change in our lives and communities.”
